The Round Rock Chapter of Navajo Nation lost its historic trading post when the building was destroyed by a fire in 2014. The redevelopment and revitalization of this brownfield presents an opportunity to re-center this important community place, rejuvenate connections and culture, and practice Hózhó, a Navajo (Diné) word and concept that is often translated as “balance and beauty”. Tribal TAB Partner, the Indigenous Design and Planning Institute (iD+Pi) at University of New Mexico (UNM), collaborated with Diné College and UNMs Community & Regional Planning Department to engage the Round Rock community and develop design concepts for the trading post. The intent of the project is to not only revision this historic building, but to also help the Round Rock Chapter diversify its economic opportunities.
