Departing Into the Future: An Adaptive Reuse Plan for the Historic Union Depot
Joplin, MO

205 N Main St Rd
Joplin, MO 64801
United States

KSU TAB, in collaboration with our partners at South Dakota State University School of Design, prepared an adaptive reuse plan for the historic Union Train Depot in Joplin, Missouri. When the City of Joplin reached out to KSU TAB for assistance, the request was accompanied by this statement: “The community generally loves the building and understands its value, but after years of vacancy and multiple failed starts, the Depot has started to feel hopeless to the community.” Following considerable input from community members and City stakeholders a reuse plan was created, which presented the former train depot as the future home of creative and versatile mixed-usages, including a visitor information center, office space, a micro-brewery, a restaurant, and a bakery.
